Ibiza isn’t just synonymous with partying and endless nights. This marvellous Balearic island also has a tranquil, nature-filled side that you must discover. There are plenty of spectacular spots we’re sure you’ll fall in love with, but one place captures the serene and authentic essence of Ibiza perfectly: Cala d’Hort, in the municipality of Sant Josep de Talaia.
It’s a beach with golden sand and crystal-clear waters, boasting a charm that’s hard to put into words. Part of the Cala d’Hort Natural Reserve, it has a Blue Flag award and privileged views of the Es Vedrà islet. It’s also the perfect spot to marvel at nature, feel the sea breeze, disconnect, and of course, enjoy a very special sunset.
What to do and see at Cala d'Hort
Despite what you may think, Cala d’Hort isn’t just a beach for sunbathing and swimming in clear waters — although that plan doesn’t sound bad at all! In fact, there are several things you can do and see to make the most of your visit to this special corner of Ibiza.
One of them is admiring the Es Vedrà islet — located right in front of the beach — one of Cala d’Hort’s biggest attractions. Many legends and myths surround this place, and it’s not hard to see why, as its silhouette and mysterious aura invite speculation.
In addition to getting lost in the stories surrounding Es Vedrà, if you’re a hiking enthusiast, you can also enjoy privileged views of the islet by following one of the trails that start from Cala d’Hort.
And of course, water sports are a classic here; whether you’re a fan of snorkelling, paddle surfing, or jet skiing, Cala d’Hort offers it all. But without a doubt, there are four things you absolutely cannot miss if you visit Cala d’Hort. Take a look!
#1 Take a boat trip around Es Vedrà
For a unique experience, a boat trip around Es Vedrà is one of the best options. You’ll be able to admire the islet from different perspectives and discover just how impressive its silhouette is from the sea. Many boat tours also include stops for swimming and snorkelling in hidden coves, making the experience even more special.
#2 Climb to the Es Vedrà Viewpoint: the best views of the islet and Cala d’Hort
For the most breathtaking panoramic views of the entire island of Ibiza, Cala d’Hort, and Es Vedrà, you can’t miss this viewpoint, a perfect place to visit at any time of day, especially during sunset. Keep in mind, however, that it’s a very touristy spot, frequented by many people every day; it’s best to visit during the week.
To get there, you can park in one of the two available car parks and walk for about 20 minutes along an easy dirt trail. Once there, you’ll realise it’s a place that feels quite vertiginous because of the height, as it has no safety barriers, so be cautious and avoid getting too close to the edge of the cliff.
#3 Enjoy the sunset
Cala d’Hort is one of the best places in Ibiza to watch the sunset. Here, the sky is painted in shades of orange, pink, and purple, creating an unforgettable natural spectacle over the sea. There are countless ways to experience the Ibizan sunset: directly from the beach, from a boat anchored on the rocks, from a kayak, or from a speedboat (there are several options to rent one).
And if you’re up for going a little further, between Cala d’Hort and Es Cubels, there’s a cliff area where you’ll find the Es Savinar tower, a perfect viewpoint for watching the sunset near Cala d’Hort. You’ll reach it after a 15-minute walk.
#4 Dine at local restaurants
If, along with a dreamlike natural setting, you also want to enjoy the best seafood cuisine, Cala d’Hort is your place. There are many nearby restaurants where you can savour true Ibizan cuisine. There’s nothing better than a good paella, seafood, or fresh fish with views of Es Vedrà to complete the experience, right?
And if you’re more of a meat lover, you’ll also find plenty of options. Lamb and veal are typical products in Sant Josep’s cuisine. Some of the restaurants that will best treat your taste buds are: Cala d’hort — yes, with the same name — El Carmen, Es Boldado, or La Mesa D’es Vedrà. All of them offer delicious dishes.
Tips for enjoying Cala d'Hort to the fullest
The best advice we can give you is to arrive early. Cala d’Hort is a fairly popular beach, especially during peak season. Getting up early will help you secure a good spot and enjoy the surroundings more.
And for your visit, at the very least, pack a bag with sun cream, a hat, and sunglasses. While there are restaurants nearby, it’s a good idea to bring water and a snack, especially if you plan to spend the whole day at the beach.
If you also plan to climb to the viewpoint or follow one of the hiking trails, make sure to wear appropriate footwear as some paths are quite uneven.
Oh, and most importantly: Cala d’Hort is a protected natural area, so remember to respect the environment. Don’t leave rubbish behind, and avoid damaging the local flora and fauna.
