Ibiza’s old town, known as Dalt Vila, is one of those places that transports you back in time the moment you set foot on its streets. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, and rightly so. Its blend of history, culture, and breathtaking views captivates everyone who visits. We’re certain it will win you over too.
Check out all the things it has to offer!
The rich history and heritage of Ibiza’s old town
Unlike the party image often associated with Ibiza, the old town offers a completely different experience. Here, you’ll find a peaceful atmosphere filled with history and heritage at every turn.
Dalt Vila was founded by the Phoenicians in the 7th century BC, and the city has witnessed numerous civilisations that have left their mark: Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, and Christians – you name it! And today, you can still see traces of them all. The most striking are the walls that once protected the city from pirate attacks. They feature seven bastions and various gates, including the monumental Portal de Ses Taules. These impressive fortifications, with their seven bastions and grand gates like the Portal de Ses Taules, are truly iconic.
Moreover, Ibiza’s old town is incredibly picturesque. Its narrow streets, whitewashed houses with flower-filled balconies, and colourful windows create an inviting atmosphere that beckons you to get lost and explore.
And within the walls, there’s an abundance of historic buildings. Let’s take a look!
Santa María Cathedral
The privileged Cathedral of Santa María stands proudly at the top of Ibiza’s old town and is an icon of the city. It was built in the 13th century on the site of an ancient mosque, which is why it combines Gothic and Baroque styles. While the building itself is impressive, the panoramic views of Ibiza from the cathedral are priceless.
Ibiza Castle
Right next to Santa María Cathedral is Ibiza Castle, a mediaeval fortress that also dates back to the Arab period. It comprises the Castle, the Tower of Homage, and the Governor’s House. Although it has undergone several reconstructions over the centuries, the castle remains a symbol of Ibiza’s defensive and governmental history, as it served as both a military residence and the seat of government for many years.
Portal de Ses Taules
This is the main entrance to Dalt Vila and a favourite among locals. It’s flanked by two Roman statues and features a cinematic drawbridge. Once inside, you’ll find yourself in Plaza de Vila, a charming square filled with restaurants, bars, and small shops where you can buy souvenirs, crafts, and fresh local products.
The Archaeological Museum of Ibiza and Formentera
Another highlight of Ibiza’s old town, located next to the Cathedral of Santa María, is the Archaeological Museum of Ibiza and Formentera, housed in a Gothic building. The museum preserves true relics and tells the story of Dalt Vila from prehistoric times through to the Middle Ages. It’s a must-visit to gain context on your surroundings.
Santa Lucia Bastion
One of the seven bastions that make up Dalt Vila’s walls is the Bastion of Santa Lucia, especially popular for its views over the port and the rest of the city. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a sunset or simply relax while watching the city bustle beneath your feet.
How to get to Ibiza’s old town
We almost skipped the most important part – how to get to Ibiza’s old town. The good news is, it’s quite easy! You can reach it from the port by walking up the cobbled streets, or by taking Calle de la Virgen, which leads directly to the Portal de Ses Taules, the main entrance to Dalt Vila. But be warned, the climb is quite steep. Fortunately, there are bars, restaurants, and rest areas along the way where you can take a break.
If you’d rather not walk, there are also public transport options – buses 03, 08, 11, 13, and 25A – and taxis that can take you right to the old town’s entrance. Additionally, during peak season, a small tourist train runs through the city and drops you off at Dalt Vila’s entrance, which is ideal if you’re travelling with children or simply want to avoid the climb.
Events and festivals in Ibiza’s old town worth seeing
And don’t think that Dalt Vila is just about history, heritage, and stunning views; it’s also a lively place with a variety of events and festivals throughout the year.
A prime example is the Ibiza Medieval Festival, held every May. It transforms Ibiza and its old town into a mediaeval market with food stalls, crafts, music, dance, and street theatre performances.
Or the Festivities of Our Lady of Carmen in July, which honours the patron saint of sailors with maritime processions, live music, and an incredible fireworks display.
In October, even though it’s low season, there’s an event you can’t miss – the Ibiza Light Festival. Famous buildings in Ibiza’s old town are illuminated with artistic installations and light projections, creating a spectacular visual show.
