What to see in Mallorca when you visit the island

Mallorca has hundreds of places to see and visit, but here are the 4 places and monuments in Mallorca that you cannot miss.

La Catedral de Palma: La Seu

catedral de palma mallorca

Palma Cathedral, known as La Seu, is one of the most beloved monuments in Mallorca. This impressive Gothic cathedral is located on the shores of the bay of Palma. Before being a cathedral, it was a mosque dedicated to Medina Mayurca, which was demolished in 1229 to be dedicated to Santa María.

No doubt from the outside it will seem like an impressive period building, with many windows and rose windows (hence why it’s also called the Cathedral of Light) but its interior will impress you even more. Specifically, its main altar, designed by Gaudí, and its beautiful chapel decorated by Miquel Barceló. It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for what to see in Mallorca in 3 days or 10, La Seu is a must.

In addition, the building has three entrance doors that you have to cross: the Portal del Mirador, the Portal Mayor, in the Renaissance style, and the Portal de l’Almoina, in which a statue of an angel with outstretched wings stands out. Oh, and there’s something else you can’t miss if you visit La Seu: its terraces with panoramic views of the city and the sea.

Cuevas del Drach: an impressive underground world

The Cuevas de Drach (Caves of Drach) are in Porto Cristo and are one of those natural wonders that make you travel to Mallorca, especially if you are fond of caving. In the Balearic Islands, there are countless caves – more than 200 – but few of them are open to the public and perfectly adapted like these.

There are four: the Cueva Negra (Black Cave), the Cueva Blanca (White Cave), the Cueva de Luis Salvador (Luis Salvador Cave) and the Cueva de los Franceses (Cave of the French). Inside, you can see many stalactites and stalagmites, walk through its tunnels and also enjoy a small classical music concert, “Barcarole, Les Contes D’Hoffmann” composed by Jacques Offenbach. You’ll then get on a boat and cross one of the largest underground lakes in the world, Lake Martel, which is 117 meters long, 30 meters wide and has a depth of between 5 and 12 meters (depending on the time of year). In addition, there are some turquoise-blue rock formations at the bottom of the lake that you have probably never seen before—they’re incredibly bright.

Keep in mind that there is a very high concentration of humidity in the cave. Ideally, you should bring warm clothes and good shoes. The route is adapted, but it is still slippery. With this, you are ready to enjoy the Caves of Drach, one of those places that you have to see in Mallorca, straight out of a storybook. Tickets cost less than €20 and you can get them here.

Valldemossa: a charming village

Valldemossa-mallorca

Valldemossa is a picturesque village located in the Sierra de Tramuntana – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – just 25 kilometres from Palma. It’s also one of those places that you have to see in Mallorca no matter what. It has narrow cobbled streets, stone houses, coloured shutters and many well-tended gardens; you will see lots of flowerpots and plants everywhere.

Although this charming town is famous for something else, for the Cartuja de Valldemossa, an old monastery of the Order of the Carthusians that later became a hotel. It hosted personalities such as the composer Frédéric Chopin and the writer George Sand, to whom they have dedicated a museum: The Frédéric Chopin and George Sand Museum, which is also worth a visit.

Other things to see in Mallorca if you are in Valldemossa are the Palace of King Sancho, the Mirador de Miranda dels Lledoners, the Gothic Church of Sant Bartomeu, the Birthplace of Santa Catalina Tomás or the Hermitage of the Santísima Trinidad.

After touring the city, you can have a drink, lunch or dinner on the main street of the city, Blanquerna, where almost all the bars and restaurants are concentrated. Or even better, travel a few kilometres and take a break in its port overlooking the Mediterranean and take a dip on Sa Marina de Valldemossa; a beautiful beach.

Cabo Formentor: the most impressive landscapes and views of the Mediterranean

All the places to see in Mallorca have something special and different, and Cabo (Cape) Formentor is no exception. It’s one of the most spectacular places on the island for its breathtaking views of the Mediterranean and also for having one of the best beaches in Mallorca. It shares its name with the cape and is a true beauty with crystal clear waters, white sand and many green pines surrounding it. In addition, there are also many nearby coves worth visiting, such as Pi, Murta, Gossalba or Bóquer.

However, the best place to enjoy the views is the Faro de Formentor lighthouse, located on a cliff that cannot be reached by car in summer. Nevertheless, you can take a bus from the beach to get there and enjoy one of the best sunsets in Mallorca.
